New Sites: More traffic from social or from search?

Support Guide's picture

On many of the new websites that we are launching, we are initially getting a lot more traffic from social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+, StumbleUpon and Tumblr, rather than search engines like Google & Bing.

Although it is expected that there is a delay in search engines ranking a new site reasonably well, sites used to get more search engine love sooner.

Are you also noticing that it is taking longer for search engines to rank websites higher?

Are you also seeing the trend where new sites get a lot more traffic from social networks, at least in the beginning?

Or are you seeing a different pattern?

Social media is definitely

Social media is definitely the best way to get good traffic for your new web pages. Seeing as how big Facebook or Twitter have become, your best bet to obtaining good traffic is from social media, for sure.

Social then Search

For us, social traffic usually comes first, as that is triggered by people actively sharing your content. Traffic from search usually takes longer, because the search engines usually dont trust new websites.

I have noticed that you will get some random traffic on a new site from Google periodically. Maybe 3 clicks and that's it, and then nothing for awhile on that page. I get the impression that Google tests out new pages and sees what the click through rate is before deciding to rank you higher permanently.

Once Google sees the page for awhile, and sees that click through rates are good, you start getting more traffic (assuming Google thinks you page is good).

Social networks have in the

Social networks have in the past years taken a major role in the role of a traffic source. You shouldn't focus on one of the two though, but start out with SEO and move on to social networks when you've built up a foundation for your website or product.
