Managing Spam and Filtering Email in cPanel

cPanel provides a variety of tools for managing incoming email. You can use all, some or none of these.

Spam Reduction Tools in cPanel

Detect Possible Spam with SpamAssassin

SpamAssassin will analyze your incoming email, and give it a score indicating how spammy the email might be. It looks at a variety of factors and tries to estimate the likelihood that an email is spam or not. Many email clients then use this score to determine how to display the email to you. For example, emails with a high spam score may go directly into the spam folder or be deleted.

Verify Senders are Real with BoxTrapper

You can use BoxTrapper to verify that email that you are receiving is from a real live person. This is useful for email accounts where you do not subscribe to many newsletters, and expect email to only come from friends and family and other authorized senders.

This can be used in combination with SpamAssassin to only attempt to verify email with a high spam score, letting whitelisted senders or emails with a low spam score through without challenging the sender on whether they are a real person or not.

Handle Specific Types of Email with Email Filters

You can also use Email Filters if you want even more control over incoming email. You can have cPanel take certain actions, such as forward an email or delete it, based on a variety of criteria such as the sender, recipient, keywords or headers.

Fight Email Spoofing with Email Authentication

You can also setup Email Authentication to help fight spoofed email addresses, where spammers pretend to be someone they are not.

You can setup DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) to check and see if incoming email is coming from authorized servers and setup Sender Policy Framework (SPF) to specify which servers are authorized to send email on your behalf.
