Hosting Nation Blog

We are moving, get on the bus!

This is a copy of the email we’ve sent out to all our domain name customers. Email Subject: Urgent News from Hosting Nation. We are moving your domains! You are receiving this email because you have a domain registered with Hosting Nation and your email address is the Registrant email contact. What is happening? Due to a recent major price increase at our domain provider Enom, and rather poor service we’ve received, we are moving to a new domain provider. We have had an enterprise level Enom account since 2006, and now are moving all our domains to our new provider – Hexonet. Your domain will still be managed by Hosting Nation entirely. Our upstream provider of domains is what is changing. You will continue to login and pay Hosting Nation for domains.   How is this going to happen? To achieve this, we need your cooperation. Since all the domains we manage (your domains) have to be officially ‘moved’ from our Enom account to our Hexonet account, we need your EPP Key for each domain name registered with us. When your domain renewal comes due, and you pay for the renewal, the domain will physically move from our old Enom account to our new Hexonet account. But in order for that to happen, we 1st need the EPP Key for each domain to be renewed. We cannot ‘see’ your EPP Key, but we can send it to your email address on the Registrant contact for the domain name.   What do I need to do? We are going to send out your EPP Key to you for each domain name you have registered with us. All you need to do is forward that email back to us at epp@hosting-nation.com That’s it! Not so hard eh? We have also attached a screenshot of what the email will look like when you receive your EPP Key (see below or attachment in email).   The result! The next time your domain renews with us, it will actually renew & transfer from our old account to our new one. We thought this would   Got Questions? What if I don’t send you the EPP Key? You will then stay on our Enom account where you are now, and as of May 30th this month the prices will increase significantly to help us cover the Enom price increase we will incur. Don’t say we didn’t warn you! What if I don’t want to renew my domain? No worries, simply don’t send the EPP Key back to us. You are choosing to not renew anyway, so just let it expire where it is. How do I know this is not some phishing or fraud scheme? To verify the authenticity of this notice, you can check the links below on our own websites where we’ve posted this same notice. Domain Price Adjustment 2016

Today we are raising our retail domain name rates on both our US and Canadian websites to bring us up to par. Hosting Nation’s last domain price increase was in 2013 when Verisign, CIRA (.CA) as well as PIR (.ORG) all increased their bulk prices and domain providers including Hosting Nation found it necessary to adjust their prices accordingly. Although being a boutique hosting company, over the years we’ve offered domain rates on par or lower than larger competitors such as GoDaddy. We plan on continuing our competitive culture but have noticed in many cases our rates fell well below and in some cases have been sold at a loss. For example on our Canadian website we have charged $13.40CAN for .COM for years, which converts to $9.78USD, while GoDaddy is asking $14.99USD (+ ICANN fee of $.018) for a total of $15.17USD on renew. A difference of $5.39USD! It’s been great for you as we didn’t compensate for our Canadian dollar drop. Our corporate culture was never intended to be the cheapest place on the block, but one that provides more value for our hosted services. We sincerely hope your experience with us has been a positive one. New Retail Domain Prices For our retail clients, domain prices will increase as of March 1st, 2016. The new rates will be slightly higher than previous prices, however we have strived to keep our prices competitive. Naturally our Canadian dollar rates will rise more significantly than our US dollar rates due to the poor value on the CAN dollar at this time. We hope that will change soon! Canadian Dollar US Dollar .COM $18.95 .NET $21.55 .ORG $20.70 .INFO $20.75 .CA $26.80 (will come down later this year) .COM $13.90 .NET $15.65 .ORG $15.00 .INFO $15.05 .CA $19.40 (will come down later this year)   Domain Volume Rates If you have more than 10 domains you qualify for our volume rates. For more information about the volume rates and how you can start taking advantage of them, please email us or give us a call and speak with one of our representatives. Some Example Volume Rates in USD .COM $11.23 .NET $13.53 .ORG $12.98 .INFO $13.01 .CA $17.44 We appreciate your business, and we will continue to strive towards excellent customer service at a competitive rate. Meet Tomkins

Our new server has been activated and placed into service. It is a dual quad-core xeon 5620 machine with 12GB or RAM. We have named it tomkins.hosting-nation.com. Thomas Tomkins (1572 – 1656) was an English composer of the late Tudor and early Stuart period. Tomkins wrote madrigals, keyboard music, consort music, anthems, and liturgical music. It our first server to run CloudLinux 6 that comes with more resource control, and PHP 5.3 by default. Listen to the beautiful music of tomkins!

How CloudFlare increases speed and security of your site

This is a guest post written and contributed by CloudFlare. CloudFlare makes it easy for any site to be as fast and secure as the Internet giants. CloudFlare, a web performance and security company, is excited to announce our partnership with Host Nation!  If you haven’t heard about CloudFlare before, our value proposition is simple: we’ll make any website twice as fast and protect it from a broad range of web threats. Today, hundreds of thousands of websites—ranging from individual blogs to e-commerce sites to the websites of Fortune 500 companies to national governments—use CloudFlare to make their sites faster and more secure. We power more than 40 billion monthly page views—more than Amazon.com, Wikipedia, Twitter, Zynga, AOL, Apple and Bing combined—and over 25% of the Internet’s population regularly passes through our network. Faster web performance CloudFlare is designed to take a great hosting platform like Hosting Nation and make it even better. We run 17 data centers  strategically located around the world. When you sign up for CloudFlare, we begin routing your traffic to the nearest data center.   As your traffic passes through the data centers, we intelligently determine what parts of your website are static versus dynamic.  The static portions are cached on our servers for a short period of time, typically less than 2 hours before we check to see if they’ve been updated.  By automatically moving the static parts of your site closer to your visitors, the overall performance of your site improves significantly. CloudFlare’s intelligent caching system also means you save bandwidth, which means saving money, and decreases the load on your servers, which means your web application will run faster and more efficiently than ever. On average, CloudFlare customers see a 60% decrease in bandwidth usage, and a 65% in total requests to their servers.  The overall effect is that CloudFlare will typically cut the load time for pages on your site by 50% which means higher engagement and happier visitors. Broad web security Over the course of 2011, CloudFlare identified a 700% increase in the number of distributed denial of service attacks  (DDoS) we track on the Internet (see the chart below). As attacks like these increase, CloudFlare is stepping up to protect sites.   CloudFlare’s security protections offer a broad range of protections  against attacks such as DDoS, hacking or spam submitted to a blog or comment form. What is powerful about our approach is that the system gets smarter the more sites that are part of the CloudFlare community. We analyze the traffic patterns of hundreds of millions of visitors in real time and adapt the security systems to ensure good traffic gets through and bad traffic is stopped. In time, our goal is nothing short of making attacks against websites a relic of history. And, given our scale and the billions of different attacks we see and adapt to every year, we’re well on our way to achieving that for sites on the CloudFlare network. Signing up Any website can deploy CloudFlare, regardless of your underlying platform.  By integrating closely with Hosting Nation, we make the process of setting up CloudFlare “1 click easy” through your existing Hosting Nation cPanel dashboard.  Just look for the CloudFlare icon, choose the domain you want to enable, and click the orange cloud. That’s it! We’ve kept the price as low as possible and plans offered through Hosting Nation are free.  Moreover, we never charge you for bandwidth or storage, therefore saving you tons via reduced bandwidth costs. For site owners who would like to take advantage of CloudFlare’s advanced offerings, we also offer a ‘Pro’ tier of service for $20/month. The ‘Pro’ tier includes all of the ‘Free’ tier’s offerings, as well as extra features like SSL, full web application firewall and faster analytics. We’re proud that every day more than a thousand new sites, including some of the largest on the web, join the CloudFlare community. If you’re looking for a faster, safer website, you’ve got a good start with Hosting Nation, but the next step is to join the CloudFlare community.

Shared Resource Management through CloudLinux

Last year we mentioned that we were looking at installing CloudLinux across our fleet of shared hosting servers.  We have finally completed that task. So what is CloudLinux, why is Hosting Nation excited about it and what does it mean to our customers? In a typical shared webhosting server environment, when a user is abusing the server it affects the rest of the users on that server. There are a few limitations that can be put on a hosting account such as disk quotas and PHP memory limits, but they don’t help when there’s a runaway script or huge database queries. CloudLinux will! CloudLinux is a commercially supported, RedHat based operating system that is designed for shared hosting environments. CloudLinux creates a lightweight virtual environment (LVE) for each individual account on a shared server and allows us to limit the amount of resources any single account can use. No more can someone take over the whole CPU on a server causing problems for other users and more support calls for us. When a website uses more of its CPU allotment, it slows down without affecting the other users.  When a hosting account’s limit on entry processes (web requests) website visitors will experience an error message “503 Service Unavailable”, indicating that the account has exceeded its resource allocation. When the website falls back beneath its limit, the site will resume function. Memory limits are also in place, that unlike PHP limits, cover all processes run by that user.  In the future will introduce IO limits, MySQL limits and limit defined by hosting package as these technologies become stable. As an end user, you also benefit from the lower server load and fewer interruptions of service. You also get a nifty little display in your cPanel  which shows useful stats for your account. Customers can determine their website resource status through monitoring of their cPanel logs. Under the “Logs” heading inside cPanel, you will find a “Resource Usage” icon. Clicking on this icon and reviewing the percentages of each resource used will give clear indication whether the website is abusing resources. But wait! CloudLinux does more! Using features called Cagefs and Securelinks, server security is beefed up with measures to prevent hacked accounts from accessing you account. A user can now only see the files in their hosting account guarding against some of the tricks hackers use to gain information about other users. So do you need to be worried about hitting resource limits? Probably not. Any legitimate site will run just fine. The small set of users that this might affect are the users that were causing the resource usage problems before. Any customer experiencing a “503 Service Unavailable” error or concerned about the numbers in their cPanel  should contact Hosting Nation support to analyze the usage and  review if the website has been hacked or requires an upgrade path.

Upgrade in our Backup System (February 27th)

Hi once again. In the coming days we will be making a major version upgrade in the software we use to maintain backups. Our current system in running R1Soft’s CDP 2.0. After the upgrade we will running CDP 3.0. Version 3.0 has a number of improvements to the backend and underlying technology to make it more scalable, faster and more reliable. As well, for those of you who restore your own backups, the control panel experience has improved. We will have more details on that after the update. To set up the new version we may have to eliminate our last 10 restore points from version 2.0 as they are not compatible. We will try to keep what we can. This migration will take place on Monday, February 27th starting at 11am PST.  Please note that no action is required by our customers.
